The Bangladesh Armed Forces and Uttara Thana Police yesterday arrested three people in the capital in possession of Tk1.16 crore and a large amount of foreign currency.

The arrested were identified as Shahjada Khan Sajjad, Md Towhidul Islam and Md Saiful Islam, according to a statement issued by the media centre of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) today, reports BSS.

The case under which they were arrested, however, could not be known immediately.

They also seized two private cars along with foreign currency from a flat in the city's Uttara area.

The joint forces, based on a tip-off, conducted a drive and seized Tk1.16 crore in cash, $6,586, Thai baht 45,100, UAE dirham 10,150, Canadian dollar 500, Singapore dollar, Saudi Arabian currencies in their possession.

The team also seized bulletproof jackets labelled "Police" and two cars, a Land Cruiser ZX Hard jeep Toyota M crop 2021 and a Harrier Hard jeep Toyota M crop 2014.

According to the DMP statement, the bulletproof jackets were allegedly used by fugitive Dhaka-18 ex-lawmaker Mohammad Habib Hasan and his son Abir Hasan Tamim during the recent student-led protests. The house was Abir Hasan Tamim's father-in-law.

The arrestees claimed that the money, foreign currency and cars belong to former lawmaker Mohammad Habib Hasan and his family.
