No political motive behind trial, only want to ensure justice: ICT chief prosecutor

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Tajul Islam has said that the trial against those involved in the violence centring the recent student protests did not have any political motive behind it.

While talking to the journalists at the ICT premises today (9 September), Tajul said the main goal of the trial was to ensure justice for the cruelty.

No innocent will be tried and none of those guilty would be spared, he added.

"The ICT has decided to send letters to all the deputy commissioners, and graveyard and hospital authorities to collect data on those killed and injured during the movement that took place during July-August. The tribunal has already sent letters to the media in this regard," Tajul said.

Mentioning that the tribunal has visited and collected information from the injured who are currently admitted at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Tajul added that the families of the injured have asked for quick trial of the criminals.

"We have talked to the director of the hospital. We will collect all the information later," Tajul added.

While explaining that these decisions have been taken during the initial stage of the trial, the prosecutor also said that the tribunal will sit with the student leaders soon and collect information.

"It is tough to say when the trial will end, but we can assure that the trial will be completed while all the facts and figures are fresh," Tajul said.

Replying to a question, the chief prosecutor said that the interim government did not have any political motive behind this trial and its main goal was to ensure justice for the cruelty.
