Ending bribes, corruption can solve most issues involving prisons: Home affairs adviser

Most of the issues in the prisons can be solved by putting an end to bribes and corruption, said Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today (9 September).

The adviser said this at a view-exchange meeting with prison officials at the Department of Prisons at the capital's Bakshibazar.

Mentioning that the Anti-discrimination Student Movement did not fight only for quota reformation, the adviser said that the main reasons behind the movement were to stop bribes, corruption and price hikes of essentials.

"Bribery in prisons must be stopped at any cost. There is no alternative to this," the adviser said.

Jahangir Alam urged the authorities to rebuild prisons as correction centres and provided some directives on how to do it.

"The food quality at the prisons needs to be improved. Prison guards need to be made more efficient through training. Moreover, personal dossiers, welfare and discipline of the prison officials must be ensured," the adviser added.

The adviser called on the prison officials and said, "Ensuring the security of prisons is your main job. Increase your honour by not taking bribes because such practices damage your reputation."

During the meeting, the adviser was informed about various demands of the prison officials.

The meeting was attended by the Inspector General of Prisons, Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain, and other prison officials.
