The High Court (HC) today issued a rule for paying Tk10 crore in compensation to the family of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad, who was brutally killed by Chhatra League men in 2019.

A HC division bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam passed an interim order with the rule after holding a hearing on a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Shahin Alam.

At the same time, the court asked authorities concerned to explain why the court shall not order the Tk10 crore compensation to Abrar's family.

The court also ordered the Cabinet Division to form a probe commission in this regard.

Advocate Mahbub Morshed moved the plea before the court, while deputy attorney general Redwan Ahmed Rajib stood for the state.

BUET students and authorities found the lifeless body of Abrar, 22, on the first floor of the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead around 6:30am on 7 October 2019.

He was brutally beaten to death by a couple of leaders of the then BUET unit of Chhatra League over his posts on Facebook.
