A case has been filed over the death of a security guard of a residential building in the capital's Rajabazar area after being hit by a car driven by the building's owner on Thursday.

At night on the same day, Sharifa Begum, widow of the deceased, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station against the building owner, Engr Mofidul Islam, 69, on charges of reckless driving and over-speeding under the Road Transport Act, 2018.

Accused Mofidul Islam, who is a former chief engineer of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, is currently absconding, said Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Ahad Ali today (5 July).

In the case statement, Sharifa stated that her husband Fazlul Haque had been working at the security services company Safe Force Security Private Ltd in Dhaka and was deployed at the Shamoliya building in Rajabazar on 4 July from 6am.

"On the same day at around 8:15am, while building owner Mofidul Islam was driving out his car from the garage recklessly and at a higher speed, he hit my husband and consequently broke the gate.

"My husband fell on the road and Mofidul later rammed into him, which broke my husband's backbone. He was severely injured with cuts on his right hand, forehead and several parts of the body," she said.

The accused fled the scene immediately, leaving Fazlul's blood-soaked body on the spot, she added.

The Business Standard could not reach Sharifa over the phone despite several attempts.

Talking to TBS, Sher-e Bangla Nagar OC Muhammad Ahad declined to comment on why the case was filed on charges of reckless driving, instead of murder by negligence.

Meanwhile, several sources told TBS that the accused also sustained injuries during the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.

TBS also tried to interview the security company Safe Force Security Private Ltd for their comment in this connection, but they refused.
