Décor mistakes to avoid

Between selecting furniture, experimenting with paint swatches, and positioning art, there are small decisions that go into styling the perfect living space. Even the slightest misjudgment like hanging artwork too high or choosing paint in a gloss rather than matte finish, can distort a room's architectural build.

You can save your living room from looking like a hot mess by arranging wall décor on the same height as other fixtures in the room. Choosing decorative pieces of an intriguing mix of scale like wall hangs, paintings, or showpieces of a unique blend of fascinating shapes can give the room different dimensions.

When it comes to small-apartment living, choosing lighter fabrics and finishes will lift the space. Styling dark furniture in a small space can make a smaller living room look cramped and cumbersome. Settling for brighter coloured furniture can give the small space an airy feel.

Rugs can completely transform a room but it can be hard to select a rug of the right size for your living room. While larger rugs, or carpets, ground the whole seating area, a small rug makes the room feel disjointed.

Lighting decisions might seem like a practical part of the design process, but it is an aspect people often misjudge. While overhead lighting often seems like the most obvious choice for living room lighting, it can be unflattering and harsh. So it is best to have a plethora of light sources to create various ambiances in one room.
