Gazipur cracks down on traffic violations, collects over Tk5 cr in fines
The traffic department of Gazipur District Police actively works to ensure road safety and prevent accidents, as evidenced by over Tk5 crore collected in fines for traffic violations during the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
According to data released on Wednesday, a total of 10,292 cases were registered against vehicles for various traffic law violations. These violations included driving without helmets or proper licenses, operating vehicles without fitness certificates, overcrowding motorcycles, lacking route permits, and other traffic offences.
The fines collected from these cases amounted to Tk5,12,02,750, deposited into the government treasury through challans.

"Our primary goal is not to generate revenue through fines," said Superintendent of Gazipur District Police Kazi Shafiqul Alam. "We aim to raise awareness and ensure compliance with traffic laws to prevent road accidents and ensure everyone's safety."
The traffic department actively conducts patrols and raids in different areas to enforce the Road Transport Act 2018. They target common violations like driving without helmets, possessing invalid licenses, and operating vehicles without proper documentation.
Highlighting their efforts, Nazmul Sakib Khan, Additional Superintendent of Gazipur District Police (Traffic) said, "Regular checkpoints are set up in key locations throughout Gazipur to verify vehicle documents.
"These areas include Chandra, Palli Bidyut, Safipur Bazar, Mouchak Ambagan Crossing, and many others. We are actively pursuing those who disregard traffic laws, and these efforts will continue."
The department encourages all citizens to cooperate with traffic enforcement officials. They urge everyone to wear helmets, obtain valid driving licenses, and ensure their vehicles have the necessary fitness certificates. By working together, they aim to create safer roads for everyone in Gazipur.
