Telecom Day 2020: Sustainable development through ICTs

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day  will be observed on Sunday with the theme "Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

"In recent months, the novel coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the fundamental importance of information and communications technologies (ICTs) in economies and societies everywhere," said the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in a press release.

The ITU said now it is clear to the world that no one is safe until everybody is safe, and humanity will not be able to use the full potential of ICTs until everyone is connected.

It reaffirms ITU's commitment to connecting all the world's people while showing how ICTs can contribute to accelerating the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development across its 17 goals.

This year, the ITU will hold a high-level virtual event to address the importance of enhancing collaboration and cooperation – among countries, companies, the UN family, and others – to strengthen the role of ICTs.

This comes as the world embarks on the "Decade of Action" to deliver the SDGs and, simultaneously, advance the role of ICTs in the global response to Covid-19.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, in a press release on Saturday, said there will just be an online campaign to mark the day this year – considering the Covid-19 situation.
