UP member fined Tk1 lakh for illegally obtaining government rice

A mobile court in Tangail has fined an upazila parishad (UP) member for using food-friendly programme (FFP) cards of seven deceased people to illegally attain government rice.

Sanoar, UP member of ward 2 in Silimpur union of Tangail Sadar upazila, was fined Tk1 lakh on Tuesday.

The upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Tangail Sadar, Atiqul Islam, said, "We apprehended Sanoar when we got to know that he was trying to get government rice for himself using the FFP cards of seven dead people."

"He was supposed to submit the cards back to the upazila administration as per rules, but instead used them to attain government rice anonymously," added Atiqul.

The UNO also said a notification would be sent to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives for revoking Sanoar's UP membership.
