The Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a group of pro-BNP physicians, have called on authorities concerned to immediately send ailing BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia abroad for advanced treatment.

"The equipment needed for her treatment is not available in the country," DAB leaders said in a statement signed by its President Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid and Secretary General Dr Md Abdul Salam on Thursday (17 August).

They said Khaleda Zia is now 79 years old. She is still in prison despite being conditionally released by the government's executive order.

"She has been suffering from various diseases for a long time. Since going to jail on 8 February 2018, her illness has worsened. She did not get proper treatment for four long years," according to the statement.

DAB leaders claimed that the former prime minister has contracted many new diseases in the inhuman environment of the prison.

"In addition to heart, liver, kidney and eye problems, chronic arthritis and Covid-19 and post-covid complications has made her physical condition very vulnerable," they said.

They continued that Khaleda is very sick physically. She is currently undergoing treatment in the CCU of Evercare Hospital in the capital.

The medical board constituted for her treatment has advised several times that Khaleda Zia is on the brink of death, DAB leaders said, adding that there is no treatment available in the country to cure her right now.

The DAB statement said, "Because the kind of equipment needed for her treatment is not available in Bangladesh. As a result, it is very important to take her to an advanced medical centre abroad for treatment.

"Therefore, we call upon the government to give Khaleda Zia the opportunity to seek treatment abroad as soon as possible, considering the humanitarian aspect. Otherwise the government will be responsible if anything happens to Khaleda Zia."

They also called for her immediate release so that she can seek treatment overseas.
