6th ship arrives with 65,000 tonnes of coal for Matarbari plant

A ship carrying 65,020 tonnes of coal for the Matarbari coal-fired power plant in Cox's Bazar's Maheshkhali has arrived from Indonesia.

The Chittagong Port Authority successfully docked the Cyprus-flagged vessel MV LMZ ATLAS at the power plant's jetty on Tuesday afternoon.

The coal has been brought for Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project.

Assistant Harbour Master Captain Md Ataul Hakim Siddiqui told The Business Standard that the ship, with a draft of 12.5 metres and a length of 229 metres, arrived from Tarahan Port in Indonesia.

The coal will be unloaded from the ship through a conveyor belt using "state-of-the-art technology", according to the port authority. It will take at least four days to complete the unloading process.

With this, six large ships have so far brought 3.66 lakh tonnes of coal to the thermal power plant in three months.

The first ship arrived on 25 April. Four more arrived in May and one in June.

The Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) is implementing the 1,200 MW Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project.

CPGCBL Executive Director Abul Kalam Azad told TBS, about 65,000 tonnes of coal arrived in each of these ships.

Storing coal is nearly finished and power generation is now being tested, he said. "After this, the commissioning process will start."
