The presidential election will be held between 23 January and 23 February, the Election Commission (EC) Secretary Jahangir Alam said.

"The process to hold the presidential election by 23 February has already started. I will contact the parliament secretariat and fix the date of the chief election commissioner's meeting with the speaker," the EC secretary said on Sunday after a meeting of the commission.

Besides, the commission approved the proposal to amend several articles and clauses of the electoral law on the election of women in reserved seats in parliament, doubling the security deposit of women candidates for the reserved seats.

Jahangir Alam said the number of women's seats has been increased to 50 from 45 in the constitution. But the number is still 45 in the electoral law. "So, it has been proposed to make it 50 in the Act. Tk20,000 has been proposed as the security deposit of women candidates for the reserved seats like the general seats."

He said, "If the law is not passed, the election will be held according to the existing law."
