6 dead inhaling toxic septic tank gas in Joypurhat

Six people have died after inhaling toxic gas in a septic tank in Zafarpur village of Joypurhat’s Akkelpur upazila on Wednesday morning.

The deceased are Shihab, 18, Piton Chandra Mohonto, 19, Gonesh Chandra Mohonto, 45, Sojol, 28, Mukul, 25, and Shahin Akond, 30. Mukul hailed from Bogura while others were locals.

“The accident happened after six construction workers entered the septic tank for maintenance work at the house of Nikhil Chandra Mohonto,” said Kiran Kumar Roy, officer-in-charge of Akkelpur police station.

“Four of them died inside the tank inhaling toxic gas and two others fainted.

“The unconscious workers were rushed to hospital. One of them died on the way and the doctors found the other dead in the hospital,” the OC said.
