The Academy Awards, the highest honors in the movie industry, were handed out on Sunday at a ceremony in Hollywood.

Following is a list of winners and nominees in key categories:


Best picture - "Parasite"

South Korean social satire "Parasite" won the Oscar for best picture on Sunday, making history as the first film not in the English language to win the movie industry's highest honor.

"Parasite," about the gap between rich and poor in modern Seoul, won a total of four Oscars, including best director and screenplay for Bong Joon Ho and best international feature.

Movies nominated under this category were: Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.


Best actor - Joaquin Phoenix for "Joker"

Joaquin Phoenix won his first Oscar on Sunday for his terrifying performance as an isolated loner who becomes one of the world's best known comic book villains in "Joker," and invoked his late brother River Phoenix in one of the most emotional acceptance speeches of the night.

Phoenix, 45, won the best actor Oscar after three previous nominations, crowning an awards season that has seen him sweep every major prize for his role in the standalone origin story of Batman's archenemy.

Actors nominated under this category were: Antonio Banderas - Pain and Glory, Leonardo DiCaprio - Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, Adam Driver - Marriage Story, Jonathan Pryce - The Two Popes.

Best actress - Renee Zellweger for "Judy"

Renee Zellweger was crowned best actress at the Oscars on Sunday for her portrait of Hollywood legend Judy Garland in "Judy," a biographical drama exploring the singer's personal and professional turmoil at the end of her life.

It marked the second Oscar victory in four nominations for Zellweger, 50, a Texas-born performer whose immersion in the role of Garland also earned Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA awards.

Actresses nominated under this category were: Cynthia Erivo – Harriet, Scarlett Johansson - Marriage Story, Saoirse Ronan - Little Women, Charlize Theron - Bombshell.

Best supporting actor - Brad Pitt for "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood"

Brad Pitt won the Oscar for best supporting actor on Sunday for his performance as a charming stunt man in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," director Quentin Tarantino's love letter to 1960s Tinseltown.

It was the first acting Oscar for Pitt, 56, after three decades in the movie industry. He previously won an Academy Award as a producer in 2014 for best picture "12 Years a Slave."

Actors nominated under this category were: Tom Hanks - A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Sir Anthony Hopkins - The Two Popes, Al Pacino - The Irishman, Joe Pesci - The Irishman.

Best supporting actress - Laura Dern for "Marriage Story"

Laura Dern, whose Hollywood career has spanned more than four decades, won her first Oscar on Sunday for her portrayal of a ruthless divorce lawyer in domestic drama "Marriage Story."

Dern had widely been considered a front-runner in the category after winning both a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award last month for her performance.

Actresses nominated under this category were: Kathy Bates - Richard Jewell, Scarlett Johansson - Jojo Rabbit, Florence Pugh - Little Women, Margot Robbie – Bombshell.

Best director - Bong Joon-ho for "Parasite" 

South Korean Bong Joon Ho won the best director Oscar for dark social satire "Parasite" on Sunday, becoming the first person from the Asian nation to win the award.

Bong, 50, beat Hollywood veterans including Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino for his Korean language movie about the violent clash between haves and have-nots in contemporary Seoul.

The film was one of the biggest winners at the Academy Awards, having already taken best international feature film and best original screenplay.

Directors nominated under this category were: Martin Scorsese - The Irishman,Todd Phillips – Joker, Sam Mendes – 1917, Quentin Tarantino - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Best original screenplay - "Parasite" by Bong Joon Ho & Han Jin Won

Writers nominated under this category were: Rian Johnson - Knives Out, Noah Baumbach - Marriage Story, Sam Mendes & Krysty Wilson-Cairns -1917, Quentin Tarantino - Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.


Best adapted screenplay – "Jojo Rabbit" by Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi wins his first Oscar, for writing the political satire, Jojo Rabbit. The film is based on Christine Leunens's book Caging Skies.

Writers nominated under this category were: The Irishman - Steven Zaillian, Joker - Todd Phillips & Scott Silver, Little Women - Greta Gerwig, The Two Popes - Anthony McCarten.


Best animated feature – "Toy Story 4"

"Toy Story 4" on Sunday took home the Oscar for best animated film — the third golden statuette for the innovative Pixar franchise about a collection of toys, the value of friendship and accepting change.

Features nominated under this category were: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, I Lost My Body, Klaus, Missing Link.


Best documentary feature – "American Factory"

"American Factory," a Netflix film from Barack and Michelle Obama's nascent production house chronicling what happened to a group of Ohio autoworkers laid off during the 2008 recession, won the Oscar for best documentary feature on Sunday.

The documentary, directed by filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, was the first release from Higher Ground Productions, a company the former US president and first lady formed in 2018 in a multiyear collaboration with the Netflix streaming service.

The film, examining themes of economic dislocation and clashing cultures, traces the experience of workers in Moraine, Ohio, who lost their jobs at a shuttered General Motors factory, only to be rehired six years later after the facility was converted into a Chinese-owned automotive glass plant.

Features nominated under this category were: The Cave, The Edge of Democracy, For Sama, Honeyland.


Best international feature- "Parasite" - South Korea

Features nominated under this category were: Corpus Christi – Poland, Honeyland - North Macedonia, Les Miserables – France, Pain and Glory – Spain.


Best live action short – "The Neighbors' Window"

Director Marshall Curry wins his first Oscar after three previous nominations.

Live action short nominated under this category were:  Brotherhood, Nefta Football Club, Saria, A Sister.


Best animated short – "Hair Love"

Animated short nominated under this category were:  Dcera (Daughter), Kitbull, Memorable, Sister.


Best documentary short - "Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl)"

Carol Dysinger and Elena Andreicheva won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject, for Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl).

Documentaries nominated under this category were:  In the Absence, Life Overtakes Me, St Louis Superman, Walk Run Cha-Cha.


Best original song - (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again - Rocketman (Elton John & Bernie Taupin)

Elton John wins his second Oscar, for the original song (I'm Gonna) Love Me Again, from Rocketman, a biopic on his life. John previously won for Can You Feel the Love Tonight, from The Lion King. This is his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin's first Oscar.

"This Oscar is for Bernie," Elton said in a post-win interview. "Without him, I'm nobody, He started the journey and we're still together after 53 years. This film has taken 12 years, and in the end we got it made the right way. I'm so thrilled for Bernie because I love him so much."

Songs nominated under this category were:  I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away - Toy Story 4 (Randy Newman), I'm Standing With You - Breakthrough (Diane Warren), Into the Unknown - Frozen 2 (Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez), Stand Up - Harriet (Joshuah Brian Campbell & Cynthia Erivo).


Best original score – "Joker" - Hildur Guðnadóttir

Songs nominated under this category were:  Little Women - Alexandre Desplat, Marriage Story - Randy Newman, 1917 - Thomas Newman, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - John Williams.


Best cinematography – "1917" - Roger Deakins

Movies nominated under this category were:  The Irishman - Rodrigo Prieto, Joker - Lawrence Sher, The Lighthouse - Jarin Blaschke, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Robert Richardson.


Best film editing – "Ford v Ferrari" - Michael McCusker & Andrew Buckland

Movies nominated under this category were:  The Irishman - Thelma Schoonmaker, Jojo Rabbit - Tom Eagles, Joker - Jeff Groth, Parasite - Yang Jinmo.


Best visual effects: "1917" - Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler & Dominic Tuohy

Movies nominated under this category were:  Avengers: Endgame - Dan DeLeeuw, Russell Earl, Matt Aitken & Dan Sudick; The Irishman - Pablo Helman, Leandro Estebecorena, Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser & Stephane Grabli; The Lion King - Robert Legato, Adam Valdez, Andrew R Jones & Elliot Newman; Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Roger Guyett, Neal Scanlan, Patrick Tubach & Dominic Tuohy.

Movies nominated under this category were:  Joker - Alan Robert Murray, 1917 - Oliver Tarney & Rachael Tate, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Wylie Stateman, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - Matthew Wood & David Acord.


Best production design - "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood" - Barbara Ling & Nancy Haigh

Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh win Oscars for their work on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Movies nominated under this category were:  The Irishman - Bob Shaw & Regina Graves, Jojo Rabbit - Ra Vincent & Nora Sopková, 1917 - Dennis Gassner & Lee Sandales, Parasite - Lee Ha Jun & Cho Won Woo.


Best costume design – "Little Women" - Jacqueline Durran

Jacqueline Durran wins for Little Women. Durran won an Academy Award for her work on Anna Karenina (2012), and has been nominated seven times for the award.

Movies nominated under this category were:  The Irishman - Sandy Powell & Christopher Peterson, Jojo Rabbit - Mayes C Rubeo, Joker - Mark Bridges, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood - Arianne Phillips.


Best make-up and hairstyling – "Bombshell" - Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan & Vivian Baker

Movies nominated under this category were:  Joker - Nicki Ledermann & Kay Georgiou, Judy - Jeremy Woodhead, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil - Paul Gooch, Arjen Tuiten & David White, 1917 - Naomi Donne, Tristan Versluis & Rebecca Cole.
