After placing the wreaths, they stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of the Father of the Nation while the bugle played the last post.

A smartly turned out contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave an honour guard on the occasion.

The president and the prime minister in-person paid homage to the Father of the Nation at Tungipara for the first time after 17 March 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

Flanked by senior leaders of her party, Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League President, placed another wreath at the Mazar of Bangabandhu on behalf of the party.

Cabinet members, PM's advisers, parliament members and senior leaders of Bangladesh Awami League were present.

Abdul Hamid and Sheikh Hasina offered Fateha and joined a munajat seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu as well as other martyrs of the August 15 carnage.

The Father of the Nation's grandchildren – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and PM's younger sister Sheikh Rehana's son Radwan Mujib Siddiq – were present.

The president also signed the visitor's book kept on the Mazar premises.

Earlier on his arrival on the Mazar premises, President Abdul Hamid was received by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Later, the premier laid another wreath at Bangabandhu's Mazar along with members of the National Implementation Committee for Birth Centenary Celebration of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The premier flew to Tungipara after placing a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Dhanmondi Road No 32 in the capital.

The birthday of Bangabandhu is being observed across the country as National Children's Day for many years.

Police have detained eight people in connection with the looting of Tk1.72 crore from a depot office of Abul Khair Tobacco Company in Bandarban.

Moreover, Tk52.57 lakh of the looted amount has been recovered from the detainees.

Superintendent of Bandarban police Mohammad Shahidullah Kawsar disclosed this at a press briefing at his office this morning (23 May).

On 9 May, a group of 15 to 20 muggers looted the amount from the officials of the depot at the gunpoint in Lama upazila, he said.

Later, the authorities filed a case in this connection, the police official said, adding that they initially detained two suspects.

Based on their information, the police detained six more accused, he said.

Taking the detainees, police conducted drives in four locations of the Lama and nearby Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar and recovered Tk52.57 lakh, said the SP.

During the preliminary interrogation, the detainees admitted that they were members of an inter-district robbery gang and their mastermind Abdul Karim had been freed from jail on bail around seven days before the mugging.

During the drive, various weapons, including three local guns and six rounds of bullets, were seized, he said.

Legal action will be taken against the detainees accordingly, he added.

The Election Commission (EC) has directed the regional election officers to send reports "to the designated table" to expedite the disposal of applications for correction of information in the National Identity Card (NID).

The directive, signed by Muhammad Hasanuzzaman, director (Administration and Finance) of the National Identity Registration Division of the EC, was sent to the field-level regional election officers on Tuesday.

The directive stated that in order to quickly dispose of applications related to the National Identity Card service, three separate investigation reports have been finalised with the approval of the Secretariat, divided into 'general, expatriate and employee' categories according to the type of application.

After ascertaining the type of occupation of the applicant, the investigation officer will fill up the applicable 'table' (attached T-1, T-2 or T-3) and send it electronically to the settling officer in the form of an advance letter with the opinion memorandum number.

Fact-checking body "Rumor Scanner" in an investigation found that the viral issue of the presence of US forces in Cox's Bazar is a misleading propaganda.

The fact-checking team of the Rumor Scanner mentioned that, in fact, under the arrangement of the US Embassy in Dhaka, these kinds of training programmes are being conducted in the last few years.

So, this kind of training is not new, and the viral issue is misleading propaganda, they opined.

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed today (23 May) said he is facing a wide range of challenges beyond the purview of his ministry.

"Many criticise us, calling us ineffective. Criticism is fine, but such comments do not create a good impression outside. It damages the country's image," he said while addressing an event at Dhaka Residential Model College.

The event -- the national round of the Bangladesh Economics Olympiad 2025 -- was chaired by Hossain Zillur Rahman, former adviser to the caretaker government and chair of the Olympiad organising committee.

On the upcoming budget, Salehuddin said, "There has been talk of various tax exemptions. The day after the budget, we will have to answer many questions. But determining what the public wants is not easy."

"The IMF couldn't impose everything they wanted. We've reached a compromise," he added.

Speaking at the event, Fahmida Khatun, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), said, "Our GDP has grown by 1% each decade, but the benefits have not been evenly distributed, increasing inequality.

"The growth has also not created enough jobs, and youth unemployment has risen. People have been suffering from high inflation for the last two and a half years. A one-sided, politically driven economy only pushes society backwards."

Masrur Arefin, managing director of City Bank, presenting the keynote paper, noted, "In the past nine months, while major achievements may be few, one key success is the curbing of malpractice in the banking sector.

"Money laundering has been halted. However, political uncertainty is once again on the rise."
