During the morning rush, preparing to go to the office, working couple Rakib and Farzana Rahman noticed that their refrigerator was not working. The switchboard it was plugged into had burned.

Already late for work, the couple could not immediately invest more time in finding an electrician to fix the issue.

Rakib booked an electrician for a check-up the next day. The electrician replaced the switchboard and found that the refrigerator's compressor was dysfunctional. He charged Tk 400; with a third of the amount his service charge and the rest the price of a new switchboard.

The Rahman couple had to wait for five more days to finally repair their refrigerator. Throughout the time, the family could not use their refrigerator and had to rely on take-out food.

Addressing such day-to-day hassles of conjugal families – where both husband and wife are breadwinners – Sheba.xyz created an online-based maintenance service platform.

The company works on building networks with people highly skilled and experienced in home maintenance services.

Be it plumbing, fixing electronic gadgets, or repairs – of televisions, air-coolers, microwave ovens, or gas burners  – Sheba.xyz works as a bridge between its clients and handymen.

Clients can easily hire helping hands for home and office moves, as well as to get beauty services or food at home. Sheba.xyz also assists their customers with on-demand drivers or cleaners – all at the tap of a button through a mobile app.

Sheba.xyz commercially began their journey in 2016. At present, through ups and downs, the platform has emerged as the largest app-based service marketplace with more than two lakh registered clients.

"The company has more than 16 thousand service provider companies under its umbrella – and plans to increase the number to two million by 2025", says Debashis Howlader, acting head of marketing of Sheba.xyz.

Although the services appear to be intended only for commercial office maintenance, the platform rids its customers of the arduous labor of electronics repairs, cleaning, carpentry, and painting for households as well.

Contemplating the competition of the growing online market, the company had adopted a strategy of standardizing their service prices with the market average.

At present, Sheba.xyz has reduced prices to less than the market rate to spare customers of sticker shock. The rate for repairing switchboards and refrigerators would otherwise cost approximately Tk 2,500. The company reassures their customers that their servicemen will work far faster and more efficiently than general handymen.

The company offers a seven-day service warranty, round-the-clock customer support and even provides damage coverage up to Tk 5,000.

Sheba.xyz dreams of expanding its market into all of Bangladesh's commercial cities – where consumers are financially prepared and home maintenance services can be sold.

Working couples like Farzana and Rakib can now access an app to fix their daily household troubles without a hitch – for a reasonable price. This is how citizens may reap the benefits of the magical phase that technology has brought about.
