Sylhet lacked in all departments: Monir

If you have to say one word for Sylhet Thunder in the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 2019, that word might be 'disappointment'. The Sylhet team have only managed to win one of their 10 games and sit rock bottom of the points table and there is no chance of them getting dethroned from there as their nearest competitors Cumilla Warriors and Rangpur Rangers both have eight points, which is unassailable for Sylhet. 

Controversies regarding the team sparked after their coach Herschelle Gibbs said that the local players did not understand English while Nayeem Hasan denied saying that the national team coaches also talked in English. Monir Hossain, Sylhet's left-arm spinner though thinks that the reason behind the team's failure is that they could do well with neither the bat nor the ball. 

"Both batting and bowling. If you look back you will notice that we could not do well in both in any of our games. The match we won was courtesy of some good batting, our bowlers could not do much," the 34-year old said. 

He added that they were trying but were not playing good enough to secure wins. "We are trying. But if we don't play well, we will lose the matches. We are trying to play well, but are not being able to do so in all departments," Monir added. 

Monir further added that their foreign recruits, Mohammad Sami and Sheldon Cottrell not arriving have been big losses. 

"Mohammad Sami and Sheldon Cottrell were supposed to join us and the team was set up according to that. But they didn't come and our bowling attack became a tad bleak. With that, none of our local batsmen albeit one or two did well," the left-arm spinner stated. 

Sylhet will face Rajshahi Royals at Sylhet on Saturday and will try to gift their fans a win at home after two consecutive defeats.
