Students of different educational institutions have blocked Rampura bridge in the capital protesting the death of SSC candidate Mainuddin Islam Durjoy in a road accident.

Students from Imperial College, National Ideal School and College, Ekramunnesa High School, Ideal School and College, South Point School and BAF Shaheen College started the protest from 10:30am.

The blockade is obstructing traffic, leaving numerous cars stranded on the road. Also, this congestion is forcing people to walk to their destination.

"So far we have not seen any initiative by the government to bring justice for the death of our classmate. No one has come and assured us. We will continue the blockade until we get proper justice," said Muhammad Aslam, a student of BAF Shaheen College.

Sumon Das, a student of Imperial College, told TBS, "We want justice for the death of our classmate Durjoy, safe roads for all and a half-fare policy for students across the country."

Rifat Hossain, a student of South Point School and College, told TBS, "Our demand is that the government has to publish a gazette notification on half-pass for students not only in Dhaka, but for students across the country."

The protesting students shouted slogans demanding justice for the victim and safer roads for all.

The police have seized the bus and detained its driver, Md Sohel, and helper, Chan Mia.

Before being handed over to police Sohel was beaten by the mob following the incident. He has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Durjoy was killed not even a week after another student of Notre Dame College was killed by being hit by a garbage truck of Dhaka South City Corporation in Gulistan on 24 November.

Earlier, seven buses were torched by a mob at Rampura on Monday night after Durjoy was killed.

Durjoy, a student of Rampura Ekramunnessa High School, was an SSC candidate and also a tea vendor at Rampura Bazar.

He was crossing the road when an Anabil Paribahan bus ran over him and injured few others while fleeing the scene on Monday night.

Monday (29 November) was his birthday.

His body has been handed over to his family on 11:45am on Tuesday after autopsy. He will be buried in his hometown Haluapara village in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria.
