All of Disney's films in 2021 will be released in theatres

The rest of Walt Disney Co's 2021 films will be released exclusively in theatres before being made accessible for streaming.

The decision is a boon to struggling entertainment venues, as big films set to be released during the pandemic will be available online at the same time as they are released in theatres, reports BBC.

Marvel's Eternals is one of the films that will be released in theatres.

It follows the successful theatrical release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings by Disney earlier this month.

Ten Rings, about a former assassin, forced to confront his power-hungry warlord father, grossed USD127.6 million (GBP92 million) in its debut weekend in theatres worldwide.

The figure is second only to Marvel's USD158 million (GBP114 million) in July for Black Widow.

Given how all previous films have been released online alongside theatres since the start of the pandemic, Disney CEO Bob Chapek referred to the Ten Rings role out as "an interesting experiment for us" last month.

For the first 45 days, the picture is only accessible in theatres, before being available on Disney's subscription streaming service, Disney+,

Eternals, directed by Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, and Steven Spielberg's adaptation of West Side Story will use the same release schedule.

Starting around the Thanksgiving holiday in November, the animated musical Encanto will be in theatres for 30 days before going online.

Other major studios have been watching Disney closely to see if they should resume in-theatre premieres as well.

The decision comes after actress Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney for refusing to distribute Black Widow exclusively in theatres.

Following a successful opening weekend, box office revenues plummeted, prompting Johansson's team to allege that Disney's choice cost her money.

The case is still in progress.
