As part of their preparation for this year's board examinations – to be held on three elective subjects of each group, candidates for the SSC, HSC and their equivalent exams have to participate in assignment programmes mandatorily, according to a notification issued on Thursday.

The notice signed by Professor SM Amirul Islam, convener of the Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Controller Sub-Committee and controller of examinations of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, says all types of examinees, including regular, irregular, private and GPA improvement, except for ones who failed in one or two subjects in their previous year's board exams must take part in assignments on only three elective subjects from their respective group.

In the case of a student's failure in two subjects involving a compulsory subject and another elective one, the student has to take part in an assignment for the elective subject only.

For instance, a candidate failed in Bangla (compulsory subject) and chemistry (elective subject) last year. In that case, the student will take part in the assignment programme for chemistry alone.

Ones who could not pass in one or two of the compulsory subjects or in the fourth subject need not take part in assignment for this year's exams.

Examinees will collect their assignments specified by the authorities from the website of the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka complete the assignments following the given instructions, and then submit them to the educational institutions concerned, the notice says.

The government has decided to hold the SSC and HSC tests in 2021 on three elective subjects on a reduced syllabus considering the setback caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
