Beza received investment offers worth $6 billion in 2020: Exec Chairman of Beza

Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza), Paban Chowdhury, said, "Bangladesh was able to attract foreign investments even during the Covid-19 period, adding that last year alone, Beza received investment offers worth $6 billion."

Chowdhury was speaking at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mercantile Bank and United Commercial Bank at the Beza headquarters on Wednesday.

According to a press release, Mercantile Bank signed the MoU with Beza to plant trees in the Bangabandhu Industrial City under their Corporate Social Responsibility Program (CSR). And, United Commercial Bank signed the MoU to set up their branch at the Bangabandhu Industrial City.

Mohammad Hassan Arif, general manager (Administration and Finance), Beza, signed the MoUs with Adil Raihan, deputy managing director, Mercantile Bank and N Mostafa Tareq, deputy managing director, United Commercial Bank.

Executive Chairman of Beza, who presided over the function, hoped that United Commercial Bank will soon make its services open to the investors of the economic zone so that both domestic and foreign investors can easily make financial transactions.

Mentioning that Beza always strives for environment-friendly industrialization, Chowdhury said the tree plantation program by Mercantile Bank is setting a unique example for other organisations.

"The business entities have to play an important role not only in making profit but also in protecting the environment and wildlife," he added.

He also added that to prevent environmental pollution, Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) are being set up in Bangabandhu Industrial City and other economic zones in the country.

Mohammad Shawkat Jamil, managing director, United Commercial Bank, who was present at the ceremony as a special guest said the establishment of their branch in Bangabandhu Industrial City has opened up a new field of service to the investors.

Kamrul Islam Chowdhury, managing director and CEO of Mercantile Bank Limited, also present as a special guest, said Mercantile Bank is proud to initiate the tree plantation program to protect the environment.
