HC order on legality of Papul's MP post cancellation today

The High Court will deliver its order today on a writ petition filed challenging the legality of cancelation of membership of the parliament (MP) of Kazi Mohammad Shahid Islam following his conviction in a Kuwait court for money and human trafficking.

The bench of Justice Mohammad Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah on Monday set the date after hearing the writ petition.

Papul's wife Nurunnahar Begum filed the writ petition challenging the validity of declaring Lakshmipur-2 constituency vacant.

Deputy Attorney General Nowroz Mohammad Russell Chowdhury told reporters about the writ petition.

Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud and Barrister Mostafizur Rahman Khan appeared in the court for the writ petition.

The Jatiya Sangsad cancelled the membership of Papul, an independent MP from Lakshmipur-2 constituency, as he was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment by a Kuwait court for money and human trafficking.

The parliament secretariat issued a gazette notification to that end.

After that, the seat of independent lawmaker Kazi Papul was vacated and the Election Commission has set June 21 as the date of polling for the by-election in the constituency.
