An accused in a case filed over stabbing a businessman to death in front of the victim's son in Pallabi area in Dhaka was killed in a "gunfight" with the Detective Branch (DB) of police early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Monir Hossain, the sixth accused in the case.

Pallabi police station Sub-Inspector Aklima Akhter said the gunfight took place around 2:30am. The body was sent to a hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.

Earlier, another accused of the murder case, Manik, was killed in another "gunfight" with the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Eastern Housing area of the capital's Pallabi area on early Friday.

A press release of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said a DB team arrested Monir from Pallabi's 22-Storey Garments area around 8:50pm on Saturday.

Hours later, the detectives raided Sagufta Housing Area to recover arms used in the murder. A gunfight ensued between the associates of Monir and the DB team around 2:30am.

Later, police noticed bullet riddled body of Monir at the area.

Meanwhile, locals said that Monir, who hacked Shahin, was picked up by people claiming themselves as law enforcers, earlier.  When approached, DB Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner Manosh Kumar Poddar said they had arrested Monir in the mentioned time.

On 16 May, a group of miscreants attacked Shahin Uddin, a businessman, in front of his son. They stabbed him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him dead on the spot.

A CCTV camera, installed nearby, recorded the incident. In the CCTV footage, Monir and Manik were seen stabbing Shahin indiscriminately with sharp weapons. Later, the incident went viral on social media.

MA Awal, former lawmaker of Lakshmipur-1 constituency, is now in DB remand for masterminding the murder since he had a land dispute with Shahin's family for over decade.

In another development on Sunday, three more accused in the case were taken to four-day remand in DB custody.

Police sought 10-day remand each for the three accused – Titu, Sharif and Iqbal. The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dhiman Chandra Mandal granted four-day remand each, said the court's general recording officer Mohammad Selim Reza.

DB Pallabi Zone Additional Commissioner Ahsan Khan said they have so far arrested 10 accused in the murder case and of them, three have given confessional statement before the court and the other seven, including Awal, are in remand in DB custody.

Ahsan said that Awal entered land business at Mirpur, Pallabi and Vasantek areas in 2004 and since then he was patronising several terror groups to grab lands.
