Mohammadpur 'gunfight': Police file two cases, five arrestees on two-day remand
The five arrestees - Md Miraz, 25, Al Amin, 24, Mohammad Hossain, 23, Mominul, 20, and Mehedi Hasan, 19 - were produced in the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and sought seven-day remand for each of them

Police have filed two cases over a recent operation of joint forces in Mohammadpur during which at least two people, whom police claim to be terrorists, were killed in a reported gunfight and five more were arrested.
The police filed one case over murder charges and the other under the Arms Act at Mohammadpur Police Station yesterday (20 February), the station's Inspector (investigation) Hafizur Rahman confirmed to The Business Standard today (21 February).
The five arrestees - Md Miraz, 25, Al Amin, 24, Mohammad Hossain, 23, Mominul, 20, and Mehedi Hasan, 19 - were produced before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Thursday, where police sought a seven-day remand for each of them.
"The court granted two-day remand for each of the arrestees," Inspector Hafizur said.
The gunfire exchange between joint forces and "terrorists" had left two people - Miraj Hossain, 25, and Md Jummon, 26 - killed in the Chand Udyan area of Mohammadpur in the early hours of yesterday.
According to statements issued by the police and the ISPR, the joint forces received a tip-off about "some terrorists preparing for a robbery at Chand Udyan".
"During the operation, when the members of the joint forces surrounded both sides of a lane, the terrorists opened fire on them from the roof of a one-storey building.
"The operation team immediately took countermeasures in self-defence and was able to arrest five terrorists with weapons," said an ISPR statement issued yesterday.
Meanwhile, Mohammadpur police told The Business Standard that the "gunfight lasted two to three minutes. At one point, five terrorists surrendered. When detaining them, the joint forces found the bullet-ridden bodies of two terrorists."
No member of the joint forces was injured during the incident, they said.
The joint forces had seized one revolver, four bullets and a machete from the arrestees.
All arrestees and the two deceased lived in different locations within Chand Udyan and its adjacent areas of Mohammadpur.
Following the operation, the dead bodies were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsies. The remains of Miraj and Jummon were handed over to their respective relatives yesterday evening.
The ISPR statement also noted that such operations will continue to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
