Families of Dhaka Medical’s admin officer and ward boy received compensation

The families of a ward boy and an administrative official of Dhaka Medical College and hospital, who died after contracting Covid-19 at work, have received compensation from the government.

They are the firsts among families of third- and fourth-class employees to receive compensation.

The hospital's Director Brigadier General Nazmul Haque handed over the checks on Tuesday.

He said families of ward boy Bedar, who had worked at an intensive care unit, and administrative officer Rashedul Islam Rashed had been given Tk 25 and Tk 37.5 lakh.

"No amount of money can compensate the lives lost, but the money given can help the families of those who died for ensuring healthcare to Covid-infected people of this country," Nazmul said.

He called on the government authorities concerned to pay compensation immediately to the health workers who had died of the disease after being infected while on duty.

So far, Bangladesh has lost 156 frontline physicians to the coronavirus. There are no exact figures of other health workers who died of the deadly disease.

Earlier in 2020, the family of Dr Md Moyeen Uddin, an assistant professor of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, received Tk 50 lakh in compensation. Dr Moyeen was the first physician to die of Covid-19.

On April 21 this year, the government announced that the families of another five physicians would get Tk50 lakh each and that the finance ministry had already disbursed the money.
