The activists and supporters of Hefazat-e-Islam conducted a massive riot across the district on 26-28 March opposing the Indian prime minister's visit.

They carried out vandalism and set fire to various government establishments including the office of the superintendent of police at district Sadar, civil surgeon's office, district council office, municipality office, music academy of Ustad Alauddin Khan, Sadar upazila land office, and district library.

So far 55 cases have been filed in connection with those incidents and some 369 people have been arrested as of Monday in those cases.
