Rickshaw ban alone cannot ease traffic jam, says BIP

Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) said on Thursday a sudden ban on rickshaws without any alternative plan is not the only solution to the ever-increasing traffic congestion in the capital.

It came up with the remarks at a press conference titled ‘City planners’ perspective on movement of rickshaws and non-motorised vehicles in Dhaka’ organised by it.

“Banning rickshaws without making a backup plan, and having a discussion with stakeholders was the main flaw of the decision,” said BIP President Professor Dr AKM Abdul Kalam.
“The removal of rickshaws from city roads may bring temporary benefits when it comes to reducing traffic jam. However, if restriction on private cars is not imposed, traffic situation will not improve,” said BIP General Secretary Dr Adil Mohammad Khan.
The BIP also observed that Dhaka residents will continue to suffer due to gridlock and environmental pollution if no precise plans to tackle those problems are made.
