Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh's central committee Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque has been accused in three separate cases filed over attacks on police, vandalism in a resort in Narayanganj's Sonargaon and attack on a journalist.

Besides, 500-600 unidentified people have been accused in the lawsuits, Mohammad ZayedulAlam, Narayanganj superintendent of police (SP), confirmed The Business Standard on Wednesday evening.

Of the cases, police filed two while the third one was filed by a local journalist on Tuesday night, Zayedul said.

Police filed the first case on charge of attacking them while the second case has been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, he added.

Sonargaon police sub-inspector (SI) Yaur Rahman filed the first case against 41 people for obstructing public servants, attacking police and vandalising the resort. Another 250-300 unidentified people have been accused in the case.

In the case, Mamunul Haque has been made the prime accused.

The second case was filed by SI ArifHawladar of Sonargaon police over arson attacks and bomb blasts. In this case, 42 people have been mentioned while another 250-300 unidentified individuals have also been accused.

On Saturday night, several hundred Hefazat supporters brought out a procession in Sonargaon upazila as locals confined Mamunul with a woman in a resort. The agitating supporters attacked the police station from the procession, said witnesses.

They also blocked roads and vandalised vehicles. Being informed, the local leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam rescued Mamunul.

In the meantime, Hefazat leaders and activists unleashed mayhem at different places across the country following the confinement.

Journalist's case includes ICT act: SP

Narayanganj SP ZayedulAlam said the case of the journalist against the Hefazat supporters included the ICT Act as the Hefazat men damaged the journalist's devices and also deleted all the footage of the Sonargaon resort.

Habibur Rahman, the Narayanganj local journalist, said he was attacked and assaulted by Hefazat-e-Islam supporters.

Habibur is currently undergoing treatment at the Upazila Health Complex. He said he went to the resort last Saturday with other journalists where Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque was found with a woman.

When he returned from the spot, he saw some people with sticks surrounding his home at around 8:30pm.

Habibur said the attackers were shouting "capture him, slaughter him".

He said he fled the spot in the face of the situation. On Monday night around 9pm, he was captured by a group of people and assaulted as he went home to get his clothes.

They attackers also vandalised his home.

While physically assaulting him, the attackers demanded a public apology on video. His family members were also attacked during the incident.

At one point, Habibur apologised, which they recorded on the phone.

The miscreants left the house on information that police were on the way. The police rescued Habibur and sent him to the Upazila Health Complex immediately.
