Protesters in Brahmanbaria accuse Rumeen Farhana of insulting Islam
Protesters said no form of “anti-culture” would be tolerated in Brahmanbaria and warned that no one would be spared if they insult Islam.
A human chain and protest march was held today (2 June) against Brahmanbaria-2 lawmaker Rumeen Farhana over allegations that she insulted Islam in a speech.
The programme organised in Brahmanbaria's Sarail upazila saw participation from leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam along with people from various professions.
Protesters alleged that during a human chain held yesterday, Rumeen Farhana made derogatory remarks about the azaan and religious sermons.
They said no form of "anti-culture" would be tolerated in Brahmanbaria and warned that no one would be spared if they insult Islam.
Earlier yesterday, Rumeen Farhana attended a human chain in Brahmanbaria protesting the suspension of the screening of the film "Bonolota Express".
Speaking at the event, she said a state that cannot protect a six-year-old child from rape and abuse has no right to support film bans.
Rumeen Farhana also said that in the past two years there had been incidents of shrine demolitions and bodies being exhumed and burned, which she described as a rise in right-wing extremism.
She added that Bangladesh was not always like this, noting that while Quran recitation is heard in the morning, children used to practise music with harmonium in the afternoon, and questioned who was turning the country into a land of extremism.
Earlier on 30 May, the Brahmanbaria Film Society suspended a screening of Bonolota Express in the district town following objections from students of Qawmi madrasahs.
On the same night, police and local administration allegedly halted another screening of the film in Taltala village of Kasba upazila.
