The Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said that he hopes to bring the Culex mosquitoes of the city corporation area under control within the next two weeks.

The mayor said this after inaugurating the Panthakunja Box Culvert and Panthakunja Interim Waste Transfer Centre on Wednesday, read a press release.

The mayor said that every morning, mosquito control activities go on for four hours and the evening duration will be increased as well, which will help bring the Culex mosquito population under control in about two weeks.

He added that the Aedes mosquito control campaign will resume in April. The mayor also asked the city dwellers to stay patient during the time.

At this time, the mayor mentioned a change in the work plan. He said, "It was not wise to continue the Aedes control campaign till December. With the arrival of winter, we should have focused on the Culex mosquitoes but we were misguided."

"If we had received the canals at least two more months ago, maybe we could have sped up waste removal activities, which would have helped to control the Culex mosquitoes," the mayor continued.

The mayor also mentioned that in January, Dhaka South City Corporation started waste removal and canal cleaning activities, during which about 20 kilometres of canal space were cleaned and some two lakh tonnes of wastes were removed.

During the inauguration of the interim waste transfer centre, Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam were also present.

The minister said that all the canals in the capital will be cleaned and all establishments that have been built by illegally occupying both sides of the canals will be removed with the cooperation of all stakeholders.
