He was then rushed to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 10:30pm.

On 27 February, Avijit's father, prominent educationist Prof Dr Ajay Roy, filed a murder case with the Shahbagh police station.

On 13 March 2019, charge sheet was filed against six individuals in a Dhaka court.

The six accused in the case are sacked military officer Sayed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Maj Zia, Abu Siddique Sohel alias Shahab, Mozammel Hossain alias Saymon alias Shahriar, Arafat Rahman alias Siam, Shafiur Rahman Farabi, and Akram Hossain alias Abir alias Adnan.

On 11 April 2019, Dhaka Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal Judge Mojibur Rahman accepted the charge sheet.

Of 34 witnesses in the case, 28 testified at various stages during the trial.
