A 34-year-old man identified as Imran Hossain Manik was shot dead by unknown assailants in Khulna's Rupsha Upazila last night (4 September).
The incident took place at around 9pm in the upazila's Alaipur area, according to police.
According to locals, Manik, 34, was involved with Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal. He was also reportedly an armed member of "B Company," a criminal group run by Khulna's top-listed gangster "Grenade Babu".
Following the July Uprising, he became known locally as "Chanda Manik" for his alleged involvement in various controversial activities, including extortion.
Rupsha Police Station duty officer Jony Ahmed said, "Manik was travelling towards Alaipur on a van when a group of assailants intercepted him and fired two shots at close range. One bullet hit his head, killing him on the spot.
"Locals rushed to the scene after hearing the gunshots and found his body. Police were informed soon after."
He said police recovered two empty bullet shells from the scene. The body was later sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
"Although the motive behind the killing is not immediately clear, we are investigating the matter. Drives are underway to identify and arrest those involved," he added.
