Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed its deep concern over the professionalism of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Referring to the ACC's wrong investigation which resulted in trials of an innocent man, TIB said the commission's attempt to shrug off its liability – by terming the incident "a bona fide error or mistake in good faith" – is meaningless.

In a media release Wednesday, TIB called on the ACC to gain institutional acceptance by ensuring strict accountability for those involved in that investigation.

TIB thinks it would have been possible to prevent the recurrence of such wrong investigations had appropriate steps been taken in the Jahalam case – one in which an innocent jute mill worker was put behind bars for years due to the ACC's wrong enquiry.

TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said, "The ACC's confession to the High Court in filing a fraud case against Mohammad Kamrul Islam and his conviction proves how weak and incompetent the ACC's professionalism is."

He said the commission's extreme lack of professionalism and accountability has led to a recurrence of the Jahalam case.

Iftekharuzzaman said, "We still do not know what action the ACC had taken against those involved in the wrong investigation against Jahalam. If such so-called mistakes in good faith reoccur, people's confidence and belief in the ACC will be hurt."

It can never be good for the society, or the state, if topics such as people's life and dignity, harassment and mental stress are held hostage to a "mistake in good faith," TIB noted.
