A new year resolution for healthier skin and hair

What does Priyanka Chopra and your grandmother have in common? The answer is quite simple: They both use coconut oil in their hair and skincare routines. As far-fetched a comparison as it may seem, the use of coconut oil and other coconut-based selfcare products transcend generations and even nations. With western nations jumping onto the bandwagon over the last few years, coconut oil has always been a favorite when it comes to natural remedies and enhancers in South Asia. Be it dermatologists, natural beauty devotees, scientific studies or cultural traditions, all agree that the benefits of coconut oil are innumerous when it comes to hair and skincare.

Coconut oil is one of the most famous natural selfcare products concerning the versatile fruit and for good reason! Its strong hydrating and nourishing qualities are known to transform dull, tired hair into shiny, luscious locks. The oil is suitable for all hair types as well as all skin types. Coconut oil contains Vitamin E, essential amino acids, and a unique combination of natural fats which strengthen the barrier of the skin and help to maintain its natural flora. The natural fats in the oil are moisturizing and antimicrobial as well as beneficial for acne-prone skin. Coconut oil is also great at repairing and restoring dry, damaged skin. In fact, it is often used as a natural remedy to treat psoriasis (an autoimmune disease that causes skin cells to build up in rough, red, scaly patches) and eczema (a cluster of skin issues that lead to red, itchy, swollen patches of skin). Along with being an effective emollient, it is also known to be a natural anti-aging treatment.

As mentioned earlier, coconut oil is an organic and affordable option when it comes to moisturizers and is also helpful in rejuvenating your complexion. Multiple sources claim it to be a substitute for eye creams and makeup removers. Coconut oil can easily break down waxy eye makeup while keeping the skin nourished and smooth. On the contrary, coconut oil has been used by some as highlighter as well to complete their makeup. A light douse of it on the cheekbones adds a natural, glistening sheen that even most mainstream highlighters would not be able to accomplish. Coconut oil is also a key ingredient in most lip balms and lip scrubs. Additionally, it can also be used in moderation as a first step cleansing method or even as a DIY face mask. In case of hair care, coconut oil can fight off dandruff, frizz and dryness leaving the hair thick, shiny and healthy.
