A grocer was sentenced to three hours of detention in Chattogram on Thursday, after he filed a case, introducing himself as a journalist.

Justice Md Shafi Uddin of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 passed the order.

According to court sources, Md Aiyub (40) is a grocer. Introducing himself as Chandgaon correspondent for Daily Bartaman Kotha and a special correspondent of Titas TV, he filed a case against one Moslem Uddin with Chandanaish Police Station on Thursday, accusing him of extorting Tk1 lakh.

In the case statement, he said that the accused and his accomplices attacked him last 28 November at a restaurant at Bahaddarhat area in the port city. He also alleged that the accused snatched his cash and pen-drive during the episode.

Sources said the judge doubted his identity during the trial, and so asked the plaintiff to write down a sentence.

"Since you are a journalist, please write down the sentence 'my family needs corona vaccine'," said court sources, quoting the judge. Ayub failed to write the sentence.

Sources said Ayub later confessed to being a grocer, not a journalist.

The judge then summoned the court police and ordered that Ayub be detained for three hours, after which he was released on bond at around 2pm.
