The BNP-led opposition alliance has accused the ruling party men of indulging in a large-scale corruption during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The ruling party men might have forgotten the fact that everything has an end. They are dealing in such a way that they will remain in power forever," said 20-party Coordinator and BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan.

He then called upon leaders and activists of the BNP to prepare themselves mentally for tougher movements soon.

The BNP leader said the ruling Awami League has already come to realize that it has no support from the country's people because of vote-rigging.

He expressed his resentment saying the dream of freedom fighters, for what they fought, has not yet come true although Bangladesh is celebrating its golden jubilee of independence.

"There is no freedom of speech, people cannot make decisions or choose their leaders through elections and above all, there is no democracy [in the country]," said Nazrul Islam Khan.

He came up with the remarks at a programme organised to commemorate late Bangladesh Muslim League president HM Kamruzzaman Khan and Hefazat-e-Islam secretary general Nur Hossain Kasemi.

The 20-party alliance held the discussion at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity auditorium in the capital on Thursday.

"The two late leaders were the shining stars in Bangladesh's politics and assets for the alliance," he said, describing their departure as a great loss for the country.

Leaders of other parties under the 20-party alliance also spoke at the programme.

They urged all to be united and head for a movement to "restore the right to vote and democracy".

They also called upon the government to step down and arrange elections under a nonpartisan administration.
