Judicial inquiry report on return of dead girl alive submitted to HC

A report of the judicial inquiry into the return of a 5th-grade female student, a victim of "rape and murder" in Narayanganj, has been submitted to the High Court (HC).

Mohammad Shishir Monir, counsel for the petitioners in the HC, confirmed the matter on Monday.

On 25 August, five lawyers filed a petition in the HC to confirm the accuracy, validity, rationality, and case documents of the case filed with Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station and the subsequent proceedings.

After the hearing on 27 August, the HC summoned the former investigating officer in connection with the student's return. The court instructed the current investigating officer to appear with the case documents.

On 17 September, both the present and former investigating officer appeared in the court with explanations. The court then set 24 September as the date for the order.

On 24 September, the HC ordered the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Narayanganj to conduct a judicial inquiry.

On 19 November, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Narayanganj sought another month for further investigation. The HC bench comprising of Justices M Enayetur Rahim and Md Mostafizur Rahman set 5 January for the next order.

The five lawyers who applied are Md Asad Uddin, Md Jobaidur Rahman, Md Ashraful Islam, Md Al Reza Amir, and Md Misbah Uddin.

On 24 August, a national daily reported that a schoolgirl, whose body had been dumped in a river after being raped, had returned alive after 49 days.

Referring to the incident, Shishir Monir said the student had gone missing on 4 July. On 6 August, her father filed a kidnapping case with Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station, after which three persons, Abdullah, Rakib and Khalil, were arrested and subsequently made confessional statements under section 164.

In their confession, they said the student had been gang-raped and killed and her body had been dumped in the River Shitalakshya.

After recording the statement, the accused were sent to jail.

But the student was found alive on 23 August. The question now remains why the accused had confessed to the gang-rape and murder of a student who had returned unharmed.
