Fixing LPG price: BERC chairman offers apology to High Court

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Chairman Abdul Jalil has offered an unconditional apology to the High Court for not complying with its directive to fix the price of LP gas through a public hearing.

Advocate Abdul Motin Khasru filed a petition seeking the apology on behalf of the BERC chairman on Tuesday.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim fixed 11 January next year for announcing its order on the petition.

On 29 November, the High Court issued a contempt of court rule against Abdul Jalil and power, energy and mineral resources secretary for disobeying the court's order.

The rule sought the explanation of why their inaction to comply with the court's directives would not be declared illegal. They were asked to submit the explanation within two weeks.

Earlier, on 25 August, the High Court directed the BERC to fix the price of LP gas through a public hearing and submit a report to it within 30 days.

The court gave the directive after hearing a writ petition filed by the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB).

Even though a long time had passed after the directive was given, the BERC had not taken any initiative to comply with the order.

They did not even submit the report to the court.

Then on 29 November, CAB filed the contempt of court case against them.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua moved on behalf of the CAB.
