To a get a job in the Army, Shipon Protab, 24 – an unemployed youth – gave Sohel Shikdar – a suspected swindler – Tk 3,00,000 in February.

“I had to sell ornaments of my mother and sister,” said Protab, “to get that money.”

One month after that. Shikdar told Protab he had got the job and would get the appointment letter after medical test.

“I got a message about medical test,” said Protab, “from a Teletalk number.” “It instructed me to go to CMH Dhaka.”

But when Shipon wanted to go there, Shikdar started showing excuses. Protab then realized he may have been cheated.

Dhaka Metro North Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Shikdar, 48 – who had been giving false promises of managing jobs in the Bangladesh Army – from Mirpur on Thursday.

“Acting on victims’ complaints, we conducted a raid in Vashantek and rounded him up,” said Md Abul Kalam Azad, special superintendent of police of PBI.

“Shikder confessed his crime during primary interrogation.”

He would get hold of original SSC and HSC certificates of job-seekers, using tricks. Next, he would blackmail them, asking for money, said PBI.

“We recovered many original certificates from his house,” said Azad.

Shikdar is not the only one who is fooling the job seekers, this way. There are many of them. He has two more partners in crime and the police is looking for them, said PBI.
