A total of 21 drug peddlers, including two of former lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi's brothers, who surrendered last year have secured bail in a Cox's Bazar court.

Apart from Bodi's brothers Abdur Shukkur and Aminur Rahman alias Amin, six of his relatives and 13 other drug traders came out of jail on Monday.

Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail passed the order on November 3, lawyer of the accused Abul Kalam Azad told The Business Standard on Monday.

Earlier, five others came out of jail on bail, taking the tally to 26 among 102 drug peddlers who surrendered before Home Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and then Inspector General of Police Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary on February 16, 2019.

Meanwhile, 47 other accused who have been in jail in the same case petitioned for bail in the court on Monday. The court fixed November 22 for the hearing of the appeal.

Khorshed Alam, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, said those released from prison would be kept under strict surveillance to know whether they were getting involved in drugs trade again.

An appeal will be filed seeking withdrawal of bail order and stern action will be taken if they reengage in the illegal trade, he added.
