Chhatra Dal leader Jisan found dead after alleged abduction in Chakaria
Two women among seven named in murder case; police investigating motive and those involved.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Mohammad Isfatul Islam Jisan was found dead in Chakaria of Cox's Bazar early Monday, around four hours after he was allegedly abducted from a roadside, with police recovering his body from the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway.
Jisan, senior joint convener of the Chakaria upazila unit of Chhatra Dal's Kakara union, was reportedly taken away by unidentified men in a white microbus from Kakara Majher Station around 11:30pm on Sunday (27 September), police said.
Police later recovered his bloodied body, with his hands and legs tied and visible injury marks, from the Kachchhapia Dhala area of the highway.
Jisan was the son of Nazem Uddin of South Lotoni area in Ward 3 of Kakara union.
A murder case has been filed with Chakaria Police Station naming seven people, including two women, and another five to six unidentified people.
Rajia Sultana has been named the prime accused. The other named accused are Zakaria, owner of Kabir Tower in Sabujbagh area, his brothers Mizan, Minhaj and Nazem Uddin, Nazem's wife, and their relative Tarek-ul Islam.
According to the case statement, Zakaria, Mizan, Minhaj and Nazem are four brothers. All four are expatriates in Dubai, although Nazem was in Bangladesh at the time of the incident.
Jisan's elder brother and case plaintiff Kaiser Hamid alleged that the accused had been threatening Jisan in various ways for a long time.
"We have named seven people in the case with specific information and evidence. Our only demand from the administration is to immediately arrest the identified killers, bring them to justice and ensure the highest punishment for my brother's murder," he said.
According to Jisan's family and local sources, he was standing in front of a shop at Kakara Majher Station on Sunday night when unidentified men arrived in a white microbus and took him away.
The family alleged that Jisan was taken to Kabir Tower, where he was tortured and killed before his body was dumped beside the highway. Police, however, are reviewing CCTV footage from the building to determine whether the killing took place there.
An audio recording of a conversation between Kaiser and Mizan, younger brother of Kabir Tower owner Zakaria, has also circulated on social media. Kaiser claimed the conversation took place around two hours before Jisan was abducted.
In the recording, Mizan is heard saying that they had been "compelled to take a decision" and had filed a case, while warning that he would find a way to resolve the matter if Kaiser did not sit with them to settle the dispute involving Jisan. The nature of the dispute between the two sides could not be independently verified.
Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman said, "Police are working to arrest those involved. Those brought in for questioning were released at night as their names were not included in the FIR."
"The reason why Jisan was abducted and the actual cause of his death are being investigated. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the incident," the OC added.
Police sent Jisan's body to the morgue of Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
