CNN barred from travelling with Trump on Air Force One

CNN was barred from travelling with President Donald Trump on Air Force One for a trip to a college football game in Knoxville, Tennessee, after the White House removed the broadcaster from the presidential flight schedule.

CNN had originally been scheduled to join the flight to Neyland Stadium. But a White House schedule released on Friday night omitted CNN, and no replacement news organisation was designated, according to CNN.

The decision comes amid an ongoing dispute between the Trump administration and several news organisations over media access to the White House.

The administration had previously banned CNN, Politico and MS NOW after Trump accused the outlets of publishing "fiction or lies".

In response to those initial bans, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC temporarily paused their daily White House broadcasts in solidarity with the affected organisations.

The banned outlets pursued legal action, alleging that the restrictions violated constitutional protections for freedom of speech and the press. A federal judge subsequently ruled that the exclusion was likely unconstitutional and ordered access restored.

Despite the ruling, the administration continued to impose some restrictions on media access. Select CNN and MS NOW reporters were barred from covering arrivals for a state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump has also criticised media organisations on social media, writing that "fake news" should not be allowed in the White House.

Official White House accounts have said news organisations do not have "free rein into every part of the White House, every event and every press call".

The administration also launched its own streaming platform, Trump TV, ahead of the UN General Assembly.
