Inflation dips for 2nd consecutive month to 8.26% in August
Food inflation fell to 7.02% in August from 7.16% in July, while non-food inflation rose further.
Bangladesh's general inflation eased for the second consecutive month to 8.26% in August, down from 8.32% in July, according to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) today (7 September).
The latest rate was also slightly lower than the 8.29% recorded in August last year.
Food inflation fell to 7.02% in August from 7.16% in July and 7.60% a year earlier. In contrast, non-food inflation rose to 9.32% from 9.28% in July, compared with 8.90% in August 2025.
The figures indicate that the overall easing in inflation was driven mainly by moderation in food prices, while non-food price pressures continued to strengthen both month-on-month and year-on-year.

Fahmida Khatun, distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), told The Business Standard that the decline in inflation in August after falling in July was certainly positive, particularly the moderation in food inflation. However, she said, people had yet to feel relief in their daily lives as prices in the market remained high.
Although inflation was slightly lower than a year ago, commodity prices remained elevated, she said. As prices were already high last year, the latest inflation has been added on top of that higher base, keeping market prices high.
People would see some relief if inflation continued to decline for at least six months and the supply situation improved, she said, provided their incomes also increased. Otherwise, the purchasing power people have already lost would not return, she added.
