Jamaat-led opposition coalition launches march towards Ctg from Shapla Chattar over 6 demands
The bloc is demanding the implementation of the 12 February referendum verdict, justice for the July killings and action on a range of economic and governance issues.
The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party opposition alliance began its long march from Dhaka to Chittagong this morning (5 September), demanding implementation of the 12 February referendum verdict, justice for the July killings and action on a range of economic and governance issues.
"Our long march is on behalf of 18 crore people," Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said during the opening rally, which began at 7am at Shapla Chattar in the capital.
"Our demands are clear. People are suffering from gas, electricity, and water shortages but are still required to pay their bills," Shafiqur added.

He said the movement will continue until the rights of the country's 18 crore people are secured.
Other senior leaders of the alliance also addressed the gathering.
After 8:15am, a large convoy of vehicles set off for Chittagong following a speech by Jamaat chief and opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman, according to media reports.
The alliance is also demanding an end to shortages of electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser; measures to contain rising prices of essential goods; and an end to extortion and corruption.
It has also called for improved law and order and an end to what it describes as narrow partisan control over state institutions.
