Bangladesh targets 3,000MW of solar power before next summer: State minister
Anindya Islam Amit says incentives for solar entrepreneurs will help expand generation as the government seeks to ease the country’s electricity shortage.
Bangladesh is expected to generate at least 3,000MW of solar power before next summer, which could help ease the country's electricity shortage, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit said today (29 August).
"The government is providing various incentives and facilities to entrepreneurs in the solar power sector. As a result, the country will be able to generate at least 3,000MW of solar power before next summer," he said while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting on improving the quality and ethics of education and ensuring cleanliness at educational institutions at the Jashore PTI auditorium.
The meeting was organised by the Jashore district administration and attended by head teachers, education officials and chairpersons of school governing bodies.

On rising fuel prices, Amit said the government was being forced to adjust domestic prices in line with increases in the global market.
"Saudi Arabia is floating on oil. Why have fuel prices increased there? Why have oil and gas prices increased in the United States? Prices are rising in the global market. How long can a country like ours avoid making adjustments?" he said.
He said the government was making necessary adjustments while keeping public interest in mind.
The state minister also urged teachers to build a strong foundation of moral education from the primary level and ensure cleanliness and proper sanitation at educational institutions.
He called for regular discussions with parents to prevent child marriage. He also said no student would have to discontinue their education due to financial hardship, as the government would take responsibility for supporting them.
Amit warned members of his own political party against interfering in educational institutions or creating disorder by using their political identity.
"No one will be spared if they try to exert political influence or create disorder in educational institutions. Organisational action will be taken first, followed by legal action if necessary," he said.
Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hassan chaired the meeting, while District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon attended as a special guest.
