The day is a public holiday. Different government and non-government organisations, including the Islamic Foundation, have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday issued separate messages on the eve of Eid-e-Miladunnabi and greeted the countrymen and Muslims across the world.
Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi began this year on the evening of October 29 and will end on the evening of October 30.
It is said that Muzaffar al-Din Gökböri was the first Muslim ruler to formally celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. In 1588, known as Mevlid Kandil, the Ottomans then declared it as an official holiday.
This day is now celebrated in almost all Islamic countries, with the exception of those with a strong Muslim population, including Ethiopia, India, Turkey, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, France, Italy, Jordan and the Maldives. It is not an official public holiday and is prohibited only in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Some nations hold carnivals and major street processions on this day, while mosques and houses are decorated. People do charity and Muhammad's stories are narrated.
