Passenger held at Ctg airport with UAE dirham, Omani riyal worth Tk94.5 lakh

A joint team of customs and intelligence agencies detained a passenger and seized foreign currencies worth over Tk94.5 lakh from his possession at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram last night (18 June).
The drive was conducted around 8:15pm at the passenger departure lounge based on confidential information, according to a press release issued by the airport authority.
Officials from Customs Intelligence, Airport Customs, National Security Intelligence (NSI), and the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) jointly conducted the operation.
During a search of the hand luggage of the passenger, who was bound for Dubai on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG147, officials recovered foreign currencies equivalent to Tk94,51,397.
The seized currencies comprised 2,53,665 UAE dirhams and 4,790 Omani rials.
The passenger was identified as Mohammad Abu Bakkar, a resident of Chattogram's Lohagara.
According to the airport authority's press release, a case is being prepared against the passenger under relevant foreign currency smuggling laws. The detainee is currently in the custody of Airport Customs and Patenga Police Station.
Authorities stated that surveillance at the airport will remain heightened to prevent the smuggling of foreign currencies, the entry of prohibited goods, and attempts to evade government revenue.
The Chattogram airport authority added that Customs Intelligence, Airport Customs, intelligence agencies, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh will maintain coordinated monitoring efforts to curb such illegal activities.
