HC directs govt to ensure adequate production, supply of life-saving drugs

The High Court has directed the government departments concerned to ensure prompt supply of life-saving drugs which are not adequately produced and available in the market.
The Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) has been asked to implement the directive. The court asked the DGDA to take necessary steps regarding this.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Mahmud Hasan Talukder gave the directive on Sunday.

Advocate Parveen Akhter appeared for the writ petition. Deputy Attorney General Bipul Bagmar represented the state.
Last January, Supreme Court lawyer Sirajul Islam filed a writ petition in this regard.
He could not find Delipit-300 drug for liver and diabetic diseases in the market. He later issued a legal notice to the departments concerned, including the DGDA.
He received a reply to the notice but as it did not seem appropriate to him, he filed a writ petition with the High Court.
The writ petition said that some syndicates are working to raise the prices of drugs by creating an artificial crisis of life-saving drugs because of the inaction of the drug administration.
He filed the petition with the High Court seeking directives to ensure the supply of all life-saving drugs in the market.
In the writ petition, the secretary to the health ministry, the National Drug Advisory Council, Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries, the managing director of Square Hospitals, the director general of the DGDA and other officials concerned were made defendants.
