Speaking at a press briefing at his office today (7 June) following the death-sentence verdict against Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter, the attorney general said the process will begin once the records are received.
"Our position is that after receiving the records, we will arrange the hearing of the case as soon as possible. For that, a paper book will have to be prepared," he said.
He added that a meeting with the chief justice may be required, along with possible special directives from the chief justice.
"After completing the necessary steps, we will try to dispose of any appeal quickly," he said.
Earlier in the day, Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children sentenced Sohel and Swapna to death for the rape and murder of seven-year-old Ramisa in Mirpur's Pallabi area.
The tribunal stated that under section 368 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the convicts are to be hanged until death. Under section 374, the death sentence will require approval from the High Court Division for execution.
Sohail was also fined Tk5 lakh and Swapna Tk2 lakh.
The verdict also said the convicts may file appeals in the High Court within 60 days of the judgment under section 28 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
