Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has expressed hope that the death penalty verdict in the widely discussed case over the rape and murder of child Ramisa Akter in Pallabi, Dhaka, will be implemented within the next three months.
"Discussions have already been held with the chief justice regarding the swift disposal of the death reference and the appeal process in the murder case," he said while speaking to journalists at the headquarters of the Ministry of Law at the Bangladesh Secretariat today (7 June).
According to the minister, if the relevant bench of the Supreme Court gives priority to the hearing by following due legal procedures, then "it is possible to complete the process of executing the final verdict in this case within the next three months."
He further said, "We have a legal obligation that within seven days this file will go to the High Court Division for confirmation of the death reference. After that, a paper book has to be prepared in all cases; there is no scope to prepare it outside."
"The paper book is prepared under the supervision of the Supreme Court. After that, the Supreme Court disposes of these death penalty cases in order of priority," he added.
Earlier today, a Dhaka tribunal pronounced the death penalty for the accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter.
Judge Masrur Salekin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused.
Additionally, Sohel was fined Tk5 lakh and Swapna Tk2 lakh.
The court had ordered to recover the fine amount by selling their movable and immovable properties and to give the money to the victim's family.
